Graphic Design involves creating artistic visually communicative – image, words, symbols that convey some message to the viewing audience. The name ”Graphic Design” was first coined by William Addison Dwiggins in 1922.
It usually involves with the client who needs some of graphic design works such as logo’s, banner’s, etc and the designer who is responsible in whole of designing process and finally the programmers, printers, etc for some additional features.
Graphic Designers make use of visual arts, typography, etc., playing with combination and styles of text, color and shapes to create effective logos, banners, websites, designs for book covers and stationary products, product packing, advertisements, visiting cards, memorandum, manuals, direction-signs, brochures, etc.
Skills:
- Typography: Designing of typefaces, line lengths, line spacing, letter spacing, etc., it involves appearance of designed patterns that can prove the desired visual effect and to best convey the meaning of the reading matter.
- Visual arts: This involves many topics like skilled in drawing, painting, sculpting, photography, along with print-making, filming, interior-designing, etc.
- Page-layouts: This involves ability to lay best page layout designs for your pages depending on the purpose and the content. It involves working on different ways of placing designs, text, and other style elements on page to give an attractive look with good amount of information too.
- Interface design: It involves using of computer software development. It combines visual communication skills along with interactive communication skills from user interactions and online branding. Graphic designers often work with software developers, web developers to create both the look and feel of a product such as a website or software application and enhance the interactive experience of the user or web site visitor
- Printmaking: This involves presentation of designing work done on a paper or other materials.
- Color mixing: A more critical factor to produce that appealing look of products to the viewers. It also involves not just playing with colors, but to get more organized mixing of colors to get the ordered look too.
Applications:
- Logos, office manuals, brochures, memorandums, visiting cards and banners may serve a definite purpose for better corporate identity.
- Direction signs that can be used within company/school or specific premises or even on roads may also provide the perfect guide for pathways.
- Product designs are the most important factor to promote products. It involves in designing product covers of all that we use in our daily like covers on products like provisions, garments, to even designs on plastic bags, also designing of stationary product covers, book designs, diagrams, etc.
- Advertising/communication industry can make use of banners, brochures, etc for better publicity or good visual recognition that is usually called information design as it depicts better visual information.
